Diane K. Weeks, a county Democratic committee member from Mendham Township, agreed that Christie would be a "formidable candidate." She said he likely would end up in the race, perhaps at the last possible minute.
While acknowledging Christie's strengths, Weeks said it remains a mystery how voters would react to Christie upon learning his stands on issues beyond governmental corruption.
"His record, other than political corruption, has not been vetted. He has done an outstanding job in ferreting out political corruption. In that way, he's been a political genius. However, there are other issues in New Jersey where he has not shown his cards," said Weeks, a federal prosecutor in New Jersey from 1987 to 1992.
