Change Indian sodomy laws: US body tells India (Barf)

A US human rights watchdog has urged the Indian Government to change "colonial-era" sodomy laws to end discrimination against gays.

It has also asked India to provide for protection against discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation.

In a letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, the Human Rights Watch referred to January 4 incident in which, it said, Lucknow police had arrested four men on the charge of operating a "gay racket" on Internet as well as engaging in "unnatural" sex.

The police action, it added, shows that India's "colonial era" sodomy laws continue to threaten human rights and encourage the spread of HIV.

"Lucknow police have a shameful record of harassing gay men as well as non-governmental organizations that work with them," said Scott Long, director of Human Rights Watch's Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Rights Programme, claimed.

"They are able to do so because India's government clings to the criminalisation of homosexual conduct, which only prevents people from coming forward for HIV/AIDS testing, information, and services," the letter said.

India's Constitution, the letter said, protects the right to equality, freedoms of speech and assembly and right to personal liberty.

The International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), to which India acceded in 1979, guarantees freedom from discrimination.

in my line of business i deal with lots of foreign born. when discussing america in general, this support of gays and then the attempt to force other nations to do the same really really really really rankles them the most. i dont bring this up because frankly, gays might as well be martians are far as im concerned, but the foreigners always do and that is very telling. the usa, just knowing how to win friends and influence people, amazing.

Let me see if I get this one....By getting rid of the sodomy laws and thereby encouraging homosexual behavior, this is going to DISCOURAGE the spread of AIDS? Why is it that I have so much trouble wrapping my brain around the lefts "logic"? (and I use the term loosely)

Isn't "Human Rights Watch" an NGO (Non Government Organization)? If so, then the title is very misleading. If the organization doesn't represent the US, then it isn't a "US body". There are tons of organization telling nations (including the US) what to do and it doesn't mean squat.

You have a point. But I'm sure those "NGO"s have some access to public funds, atleast by way of tax-exempts on such organisations.

Sounds like we have groups here in this country that need to shut their pie holes and let other countries mind their own business.

I can see more and more each day why alot of the world despises us and it has nothing to do with the war on Terror.

Maybe I am wrong but I seem to remember reading that man-boy love was considered a "treat" in India's highest caste during the "colonial-era" and it was considered an honor for a visitor to be "offered" the host's boy.

If sodomy was extant it was brought in and fostered by Muslims, not Hindus. The ancient Vedic lawbook - the Manu Samhita - which Hindu law was based upon for millenia - had stringent penalties against sodomy.
