Some vests (type 2 and above) protect against the 357 magnum.

Vests go a couple of levels higher than that protecting against the 45 magnum, high powered rifles (U.S. military designation M80) and even armor piercing rifles (U.S. military designation APM2)

Was the officer in question wearing armor?

Let him continue bragging when they shove the needle in his arm.

Dunno whether that cop had a 9mm, but .40 S&W in the right load has nearly the energy of many .357 loads. Speer 165 gr Gold Dot loads in my Glock achieve an energy of over 450 ft lb, close to the 500 of many standard .357. And it holds 14 of them to the .357's six.

Experts say the .357 Magnum is significantly more powerful than a 9mm because the bullets are bigger and leave the gun nearly twice as fast.

The so-called "expert" who was quoted probably was someone from the Million Mom March. In fact, the 9 mm is a .36 caliber bullet compared to a .357 caliber bullet.  Nor is it "nearly twice as fast."  Both calibers come in a myriad of bullet weights (measured in grains), and in a myriad of velocities.

That would be your problem. 9 mm and 357 magnum bullets are interchangeable within the limits of a nines spec range. Twice as fast, not on this planet. A nine will kill just as easy. Nuts for experts.

Type II issue police vest should protect up to a 44 magnum.

Why the off duty cop had a .25 auto is any body's guess. I would say the off-duty officers have to carry, so he chose to carry a toy gun. There are plenty of choices that would have been far better.

I sure don't feel under gunned with my Glock 26 nine. It's small and easy to carry. A couple of rounds of 'Gold Dot' will put you on the pavement for good.

I frown on cop killing. I also don't believe a pistol round would send anybody on a ten foot flight. Action=Reaction. Basic physics was part of my "rounded curriculum".

"Experts say the .357 Magnum is significantly more powerful than a 9mm because the bullets are bigger and leave the gun nearly twice as fast."

Typical dumb-ass reporter.

.357 = 0.357 inches diameter
9 mm = 0.354 inches diameter

Now "twice as fast" makes a difference, and if the bullets are of significantly different masses---but NOT 0.003" difference in diameter.

My concealed carry instructor did a lot of myth-busting during my training. One myth busted was the Hollywood standard of showing people flying through the air backwards after being hit with a bullet.

Well thirty years ago when most cops carried .357 mags, we kept getting media stories of cops being "outgunned" by the crooks with high capacity 9mm's.

Well the cops go to high cap 9's and now .40's. The media now says the cops are "outgunned" because the .357 magnum is so much more powerful.

What is all boils down to is the media are going to portray those evil guns that us regular people have as somehow more evil than those the poor cops carry.

"than a 9mm because the bullets are bigger"

Yep, the 9mm is 0.355 and the 357 is 0.357. That 0.002 makes all the difference in the world...~sarc off.

The difference is what type of load you use. Even Dirty Harry admitted that he only used 44 specials in his Model 29. If we don't know what the firearm was loaded with, then we don't know the ballistics.

It is my understanding that the bullet hit the Police Officer under the arm, in an area not protected by the vest.

But "flew ten feet"? Puhleez. Let us stop and review the physics. A bullet would have to be travelling about a million FPS to have enough momentum to throw a human adult ten feet.

This article is total crap from the first word.

I'll choose a Model 59 Smith with 16 rounds of P+ over a 357 Six Shooter any day, unless I am hunting dear.

Bwahahaha.

That's particularly hillarious, since a 9mm is .357 caliber. (or, more like .356)

Study after study has shown that, while the .357 does have a better one-shot-stop record, the 9mm isn't that far behind it. It's all about shot placement.
