Figures are fake but real. There are multiple reports of "sold out" nearly empty halls, and ticket boxes issuing tickets for other titles, but credited to BB.

THis is my suspicion too. I also think it's the reason for why it's on so few screens: they wanted to pick theaters where they could get away with this. It's easy if you have a supply of activists who like going to the movies often. Whatever you're really going to see, buy a ticket to "Bareback", then just see another movie
