Workers using blowtorches to repair the roof of a landmark South Side church accidentally sparked the fire that destroyed the building, investigators announced Monday -- hours before Gov. Blagojevich pledged $1 million of state money to help restore the facility.
Constitutional issues addressed
Church leaders and members of the congregation have vowed to rebuild, and they got a huge boost Monday night from Blagojevich.
The governor announced he has awarded a $1 million state grant to help rebuild the non-church portions of the facility, which was reduced to a burned-out shell.
"It's not going to the rebuilding of the church itself, so it doesn't violate constitutional role of separating church and state," according to Cheryle Jackson, Blagojevich's spokeswoman.
And doesn't their insurance cover damages from lightning?
I mean -- from welder's torches.
I think he's just buying African-American votes.
My mom and dad's church burned down as the result of an arson a little over a year ago here in East Tennessee. They're having to rebuild using only the insurance money and whatever goes into the building fund.
Oh - wait - it was a white church. That doesn't count.
I wonder if the ACLU will step in and file a lawsuit to stop this in the name of separation of church and state. personally I doubt it, since they never raise hell about democritter politicians speaking at black churches during campaigns, but woe be to a white church where someone makes a political speech from the pulpit.
When's someone going to file a suit on this? Where's the ACLU?
You just don't get it. It's not a church, it's an historic Democrat Campaign Headquarters.
Isn't it the roofing company's fault? Wouldn't they have to pay?
Like hell it doesn't violate the separation clause (as brutalized by the ACLU)! This liberal hair-splitting is pitifully comical.
