He read these ridiculous statements about O'Conner that some leftist wrote and read the quotes first... then he said something like "I think you'll be surprised that the person being described is none other than Sandra Day O'Connor, the Justice that was praised early today by my colleagues from the left." (paraphrased)....
He nailed them... HARD.
