Rep. Kenny Hulshof wanted to see firsthand what American troops have to deal with on the ground in Iraq. But on a trip over the Christmas break, the Missouri Republican got more insight than he bargained for.
In a one-day stay in Iraq, the base that Hulshof and four other members of Congress were visiting was hit by a mortar attack. Hulshof and his colleagues were put on lockdown for 30 minutes while a series of five blasts hit the military installation, Balad Air Base, about 40 miles north of Baghdad.
"The sirens went off," Hulshof said. "There were multiple explosions." At the time, he was in a fortified dining center with Rep. Collin Peterson, D-Minn., and National Guard soldiers from Missouri and Minnesota.
Hulshof plays the drums and sings backup for the group, called the Second Amendments. He said that the soldiers seemed to appreciate their music but that perhaps the insurgents did not.
"We figured Zarqawi didn't like our brand of rock 'n' roll," Hulshof joked, in a reference to Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, the al-Qaida-linked militant operating in Iraq.

LSA Anaconda...the most bombed base in Iraq......hubby was there in 03-04
"plooop"
"hweeeoooooh, hweeeoooooh, hweeeeoooooh,"
"kerchunk" "zing/whirr"
that first incoming 82mm is the only one I remember distinctly......mozey on to a bunker
drop NOW if something "sizzles/hisses", though.
Unfortunately, the only way I can vote for this guy is as a dead democrat
From what my hubby hears, he wouldn't recognize Anaconda now....Your daughter and my hubby were the first to set up the base there.....thank your daughter for me for her service.....btw..My son leaves for Iraq in Sept....it will be another long worrisome year for me...
Thoughts and prayers go with him for his protection and safe return. Maybe by then we'll be bringing troops home and curtailing tours.
Senators and house members should be exposed to enemy fire at least indirectly. Maybe having been somewhere where folks were actively trying to kill them and other folks were working to save their a$$e$ would give them a proper perspective on how the world really works.
