As Lt. Gov. Kerry Healey lavishes hundreds of thousands on image polishing in her bid for governor, she would be wise to heed the advice consultants give to their female political clients.
Women walk a fine line because on the one hand you have to have people like you and think you are nice, but not be weak, and on the other hand if you look too strong then the B-word comes out, said Democratic political consultant Mary Ann Marsh.
Marsh said recent polls indicate Massachusetts voters dont necessarily like Healey, let alone know who she is.
People have to know and like you first, before they believe and trust you, Marsh said.
Healey spent $212,000 on public-image costs and fund raising in an eight-month period last year, campaign finance records show.
That includes payments to a Washington, D.C.-based firm that creates TV ads, a media-relations strategist, a Maryland speechwriter and a Virginia polling company, her campaign confirmed.
That is a pretty big chunk of change, especially this far from the election, said David Mark, editor of Campaigns & Elections magazine in Washington, D.C.
Image consultant Mary Lou Andre said she tells her powerful female corporate and political clients their message will be ignored without a savvy image.
Monochromatic suits - which Healey frequently wears - level the playing field between men and women, Andre said.
