The Bush administration is preparing to release never-before-seen documents captured when U.S. forces liberated Baghdad that chronicle the extensive training of thousands of radical Islamic terrorists by Saddam Hussein's regime.
"The secret training took place primarily at three camps in Samarra, Ramadi, and Salman Pak," reports the Weekly Standard's Stephen Hayes, who adds that the operations began two years before the 9/11 attacks and were "directed by elite Iraqi military units."
The existence of these documents, and the nature of what they describe, has been confirmed to the Standard by eleven U.S. government officials, Hayes says.
If true, the documents represent a bombshell finding that shatters the claims of Iraq war critics who have maintained for three years that Saddam Hussein had no connection whatsoever to Islamic terrorism.
More intriguing still is the documentation on Salman Pak - a camp previously described by Iraqi defectors as the location of airline hijacking dress rehearsals that bear a striking resemblance to what took place on 9/11.
Hayes reports that the materials currently being reviewed for release include photographs, handwritten notes, typed documents, audiotapes and videotapes - plus information recovered from compact discs, floppy discs and computer hard drives.
Taken together, the material chronicles a massive operation that trained 2,000 terrorists to attack Western interests each year from 1999 to 2002.
The volume of material examined so far represents the tip of the iceberg. Of the 2 million items recovered from Saddam's regime, just 50,000 have been thoroughly translated and analyzed.
"Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld has convened several meetings in recent weeks to discuss the Pentagon's role in expediting the release of this information," the Standard says.
"According to several sources familiar with his thinking, Rumsfeld is pushing aggressively for a massive dump of the captured documents."

That was a wise move, the Bush haters in Congress would have just leaked it and caused more deaths.

Definitely, all of this needs to be talked about during the State of the Union. But Bush should really get crazy this year a Pre-SOTU show where Bon Jovi opens for the Pres.
Come on, the Pres is down.
To: wagglebee
The SOTU is a good way for President Bush to claim ownership of this story.
But remember, FOXnews just recently did that one hour special on the good news coming out of Iraq, with Greg Palkot.
I see no reason why they wouldn't want to tackle this in a similar fashion.

The democrats said the plane (at Salmon Pak) was for training stewardesses.
Right!!! ROFLOL
In America we foolishly teach Stewardesses in clean and secure classrooms and train them in current aircraft at the airport. Saddam knows it is best to train them around horny terrorists preparing for suicide missions!

This plus Oil for Food plus Abramoff (sp) plus Marc Rich. Only something as powerful a Able Danger could sift through the degrees of separation that protect the Dems from the evil doers. IMHO, the Dems are now in the political fight of their lives.

We have an idea. He knows. I suspect that some of the "leaks" were stories planted only for the purpose of identifying the leaks. Why tell Rocky some of the other stuff and not this?

I don't think Rockefeller is the only one, if it was just him, Bush could have figured out a way to get him off the intelligence committee.

Thanks- the satellite photos were an element of the old info's "common sense speculation" concerning the purpose of the aircraft and the complex. Common sense would tell you that the presence of the aircraft at a site witnesses had said was used for terrorist training, in a country known to fund such lovely community-action groups as PFLP and Abu Nidal's organization should lead to consideration that the aircraft was intended to be used to train hijackers. Unfortunately, the liberals, lacking common sense, continue to believe as they did then that the photos were of an aircraft used in antiterrorism training for Iraqi law enforcement in the event some hijacked aircraft should land in beautiful sunny Iraq and the hostages within should need to be freed so they could be patted on the head by Saddam Hussein in front of the media. The libs believe that the aircraft was an antiterrorism aid because that was Iraq's claim and in matters pitting Bush's word against the word of Saddam Hussein, Saddam Hussein is always right. The libs desperately need to believe such things because otherwise they would have to admit that their dogma that "secular" Iraq couldn't possibly have anything to do with Islamist terrorists. They would also have to admit they wasted all their money on Michael Moore movies and books. Too humiliating by far.

But George Tenet said there was not connection between Saddam and the terrorists.
Yes, the State of the Union Address. Maybe they'll figure out some way of scheduling the Super Bowl that day, or something.
