SAN ANTONIO (Army News Service, Jan. 6, 2006) -- Legends, heroes and all-stars traded their capes for cowboy hats and baseball caps for an evening during last night's Bill Yoast and Herman Boone Barbeque Dinner.

The dinner, laid out on the field of the Alamodome, honored players, Soldier heroes, and scholar athletes, and ending with the announcement of the Coach of the Year honors. It was also the first opportunity that the Soldier heroes being recognized during All-American Bowl week got to sit and talk with some of the Army All-Americans.

The celebration was one of many leading up to this Saturday's Army-sponsored "All-American Bowl" high school all-star football game. The game will be nationally televised on NBC.

Army Cadet Command commanding general, Maj. Gen. Montague Winfield presented the scholar athlete awards to the top scholastic all-star players representing both East and West squads at this Saturday's all-star contest. He stressed to the players that teamwork is the center is everything we do both as players as well as those serving in the Army.

Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Army for Human Resources John McLaurin stressed to the players the importance of thanking those around them who are most important: coaches, parents and teammates and to become role models to those who look up to them as all-star players and who idolize them as heroes.

McLaurin concluded with a tribute to soldiers by adding that it's also important to think about what Soldiers do for each of us and to look them in the eyes and say 'thank you' for what you do.

The Army Accessions Command commanding general, Lt. Gen. Robert L. Van Antwerp, honored the Soldier-heroes in the crowd and introduced the event's main speakers and namesakes of the event – Bill Yoast and Herman Boone. The legendary coaches were featured in the movie "Remember the Titans," based upon the T.C. Williams Titans 1971 13-0 season and Virginia state championship.
