The wife of Bosnian Serb war crimes suspect Dragomir Abazovic was shot to death in a gun battle as EU troops stormed the couple? house in Bosnia on Thursday (5 January).
Her husband, wanted for war crimes during the 1992-95 Balkan war, and his 12 year-old son were badly injured when the soldiers stormed the house - the raid was carried out by European Union peacekeeping troops (EUfor) in Mr Abazovic's home village Kozoci, some 60 km east of Sarajevo.
A spokesperson for the EUfor troops in the vicinity confirmed on Thursday that the shooting incident had taken place.
"EUfor troops fired upon them and they returned fire. During the exchange two people in the house were injured. The suspect, unable to escape, subsequently injured himself," EUfor spokesman Jem Thomas told newswires.
The wounded woman, Rada Abazovic, reportedly succumbed to her injuries at the hospital, due to severe loss of blood following internal injuries. The son is still in intensive care.
Bosnia wants investigation The Bosnian Serb President Dragan Cavic condemned the EU operation immediately after receiving news of the deceased woman, and called upon EUfor to conduct an investigation to clarify the circumstances around the lethal shootout in Kozoci.
"This is EUfor? most severe degradation and a complete destruction of confidence in its force," Mr Cavic said according to Reuters.
Mr Cavic argued that the EU operation had been a mere manifestation of force, and that the arrest could have been carried out by national law enforcement agencies.
"No matter what mandate EUfor was given, "no one has the right to take an innocent human life by force", he added.
The 6,500-strong EUfor force took over from NATO peacekeeping troops in 2004, and is involved both in the search for fugitive war criminals and in combating organized crime throughout Bosnia.
This is a quote from EUfor spokesman - but it does not tally with this post:
BOSNIA: SERBS PROTEST EUFOR KILLING OF WOMAN post #2.
Obviously this incident needs to be investigated. However, assume that the forces had been Israeli and the victims had been an Hamas or Hezbollah leader and his wife and child - just imagine the uproar.
Where is AI, the UN, the Red Cross ??????
ping!
Bad things happen in combat.
EU troops?
They need troops to enforce trade agreements on bananas and toilet paper?
I always think it a bit of an oxymoron when you hear about peacekeeping troops being involved in deadly combat. Maybe peace-enforcement troops wuould be a little better.
True.
Question is if it was a combat or a badly mismanaged arrest. In the link I provided there is a different story told; the wife starts to fire at the troops using an AK-47. Also, her 12 year old son fires at the troops. In the story I posted the EUfor spokesman says that the troops started to fire, and the people in the house fired back.
Sounds fishy to me!
Forget bananas and toilet paper. EU has never been about economics or trade - it has been about forging a federal European state run by France, Germany, and/or the bureaucrats in Brussels.
First reports from a battlefield are always wrong. Anyone who wants to know what happened will have to wait awhile.
Battlefield? There is no battlefield. The Euroweenies went to their house and went in shooting.
Poor kid. 12 years old and being shot at by brave French soldiers.
Yes...Clinton did many criminal operations, like completely fabricating the Bosnia and subsequent Kosovo invasion. However, his stupidity and ill conceived plans do not excuse this badly managed arrest. There will be more incidents to follow given the poor quality of the EU and UN method of peacekeeping.
Tom
I thought the EU opposed the death penalty?
True, but the incident did remind me of Waco or Ruby Ridge.
Nah. Let's just run with what we have.
In related news, all of the coal miners have been rescued...
We need the Italian and Spanish judges who always go after American troops (in Iraq...go figure) to investigate this. These judicial fools seem to have plenty of time on their hands.
This is report from Bosnia:
"...Shortly after the Commander made this phone call, ABAZOVIC became aware of the EUFOR presence and, having drawn a weapon, tried to escape across open ground. At the same time, a woman came out of the house and opened fire upon the Commander and his civilian interpreter, despite being informed that he was a member of EUFOR. She fired short bursts from an automatic weapon, a Kalashnikov AK-47. Soon after, she was joined by a boy.
As the Commander took cover, other members of EUFOR chased ABAZOVIC while the woman turned her fire upon them. ABAZOVIC was eventually cornered, and he turned his weapon upon himself, shooting himself in the forehead and falling to the ground. EUFOR soldiers detained him.
In the meantime, the woman was still firing upon EUFOR personnel, reloading her weapon and allowing the boy to fire as she retrieved more ammunition. As assessed by EUFOR, she fired at least four magazines of ammunition at them.
With the EUFOR troops still being fired upon and her indiscriminate firing of the Kalashnikov also threatening the lives of both the EUFOR soldiers and the safety of other inhabitants of the village, she was immobilised by a EUFOR soldier with one shot. The boy who had also been firing at EUFOR was also shot and immobilized.
Unsure of further possible armed persons within the house, EUFOR personnel maintained their positions.
EUFOR called for an ambulance and shortly thereafter local police arrived. Both ABAZOVIC and the wounded woman were handed over to their custody, while the wounded boy was taken away by an unidentified man."
1. Wife and boy shooting AK-47`s?!?!?!?!?!?!
2. Father shot himself IN FORHEAD?!?!?!?!?!?
Yes, it does...and you are right.....we are on track there.
Does anyone else see the irony of this being done by peace keeping troops? Sounds like double plus new speak.
