update Microsoft plans to release a fix for a serious security vulnerability in Windows on Thursday, several days before the patch's scheduled delivery.

The company is breaking with its monthly patch cycle because it completed testing of the security update earlier than it anticipated, it said in a note on its Web site. "In addition, Microsoft is releasing the update early in response to strong customer sentiment that the release should be made available as soon as possible," the company said.
The security update, originally scheduled for Tuesday, fixes a vulnerability in the way Windows renders Windows Meta File images. The bug was discovered last week and is increasingly being used in what Microsoft calls "malicious and criminal attacks on computer users."

I used to be an honorary unix systems admin (LOL!) when it came time to audit unix security. There's a lot of power but it depends on how well and how thoroughly you configure for security.

no, the WMF exploit was a zero day exploit that you cant stop with any existing security measures and it has been in every version of windows since 1990. The WMF exploit lets people run program on your computer when you open a picture any picture from a website, im, email etc.

There is a reason why this is such a big deal. Basically, for the past 16 years, windows has been completely unsafe to use online. The only people who knew were black hat hackers who were using this exploit to break into systems.

Keep your pc, partition the drive, put ubuntu linux (free) and then install vm ware (not free but you can try it for free), and run xp as a virtual box inside linux. It really does eliminate the serious problems. It is like running windoze "inside" another computer. Try it. You will never go back, I promise.

I wish all the people who say, "I'm changing to a Mac", would do it. Then the hackers would go after Macs.

by default (out of the box) OSX is hardenede with almost every service turned off. It really needs zero administration.

sure and it wouldnt make much of a difference. By your logic, since most servers are linux, linux should have the most viruses.

I patched my pc a few minutes ago. I also updated Office afterwards. It didn't take long.

Me too. Should shore things up at least until the weekend!
