Everything I've seen recently has been based off of technology or papers that were published in the 50's and earlier...

I seem to recall that Einstein published his papers about 40 years before the first man-made nuclear chain reaction.

Most new technologies seem to take several decades between theoretical and practical application.

Right, but the nuclear pile was not a result of Einstein's theories. It would have worked anyway. The theory did lead indirectly to a hypothesis of why so much energy is liberated, and that is sort of verified by later experiments with cloud chambers and other detectors.
