Travel to Mars in 3 hours (Air force studies Trek tech)

AN EXTRAORDINARY "hyperspace" engine that could make interstellar space travel a reality by flying into other dimensions is being investigated by the United States government.

The hypothetical device, which has been outlined in principle but is based on a controversial theory about the fabric of the universe, could potentially allow a spacecraft to travel to Mars in three hours and journey to a star 11 light years away in just 80 days, according to a report in today's New Scientist magazine.

The theoretical engine works by creating an intense magnetic field that, according to ideas first developed by the late scientist Burkhard Heim in the 1950s, would produce a gravitational field and result in thrust for a spacecraft.

Also, if a large enough magnetic field was created, the craft would slip into a different dimension, where the speed of light is faster, allowing incredible speeds to be reached. Switching off the magnetic field would result in the engine reappearing in our current dimension.

The US air force has expressed an interest in the idea and scientists working for the American Department of Energy - which has a device known as the Z Machine that could generate the kind of magnetic fields required to drive the engine - say they may carry out a test if the theory withstands further scrutiny.

Dr. Emmett Brown: Don't worry. As long as you hit that wire with the connecting hook at precisely 88mph the instant the lightning strikes the tower... everything will be fine.

Let's just hope if they get this thing going they remember their conversion tables between miles and kilometers.

It was pounds and Newtons.

And just think if you were light years away, and this thing pooped out. Wow, how lonely would -that- be?

Depends on who your traveling companion is. If I'd taken my dog to Mars, for instance, I would not be lonely at all. If I'd taken my wife, OTOH, it would seem like an eternity.

"Do you think they will let me live in Montana?"

'I would think they'll let you live wherever you want.'

"Good. Then I will live in Montana, and I will marry a round American woman and raise rabbits, and she will cook them for me, and I will have a pickup truck...or a...possibly even a recreational vehicle..."

It's not the speed that kills you, it's the sudden stop.

......and drive from state to state. Do they let you do that?

Oh yes.

No papers?

No papers. State-to-state.

"The three hours includes a layover in Phoenix."

You mean layover and spacecraft change at Moon Base Gamma

The selection rules for Heim theory haven't been worked out yet (or at least remain unpublished). Unless forbidden by these, Heim theory calls for the existence of neutral electrons, not yet observed (the relevant parameter space has been well explored - if neutral electrons were present, we should have seen a few by now).

It could turn out that all transitions involving the neutral electron are forbidden - so there would be no inconsistency of Heim theory with reality, at least for this (significant) issue. I believe there are several groups working on this problem - for example, a group at the Perimeter Institute (Waterloo, Canada) led by Lee Smolin; though, more of their efforts are geared towards developing quantum loop gravity (especially work on spin foam).

Found a little backgrounder piece here.

Americanantigravity.com strikes me as a tinfoil site, but you never know. What is Art Bell saying about this?

"I'm not flying to Mars unless they get the flight time down to two hours or less."

I will never go unless they have a smoking section on the flight.
