Just in time for dinner: 755-pound mako shark
(South Florida) Sun-Sentinel ^ | January 4, 2006 | Steve Waters

Capt. Cory Burlew and his friends had already had a good night of swordfishing when things got a lot more exciting and exhausting.

Fishing 15 miles off Pompano Beach on Reaper, Burlew and his crew hooked a 10-foot, 755-pound mako shark at midnight Sunday. Four and-a-half hours later, Burlew, his fiancé, Sue Royal, neighbor Vic Sirbola and "Redneck" Mike Carne got the big shark to the boat.

The big one did not get away. Is REAPER the name of the boat?

Mako's are super fast sharks , a close cousin to the Great White . They also are known to jump like Marlin .
In fact I had one jump right over the stern of my small
boat once ! Very low free-board and fortunately I was seated forward .

Nurse sharks taste like urine smells. Do makos taste different?

I think the term "swordfishing" is a bit misleading because they don't use normal swords. Their swords are around 40ft long and they hang them off the boat in every direction and zoom about to try to chop up as many fishes as possible. Then they simply collect the parts.

Seriously, I think I would have cut the line as soon as I saw that humongous thing roll by my 45' boat. I've seen Jaws several times.

They taste like swordfish. Maybe your nurse shark wasn't bled and iced right after it was caught - there's something in their blood that breaks down into ammonia. Makos are the same way. Ammonia tainted meat might taste a bit like piss. I dunno.

Gaffing a shark can be an 'electric' experience.

I had a passenger on a two-day fishing trip that hooked up with a 9-foot hammerhead ans after considerable time, got it up to the boat. One of my deckhands, the first mate and myself, each with gaff hooks, decided to try a coordinated effort: three gaff hooks at once.

We did the old "one...two...three" thing and went for it. Unfortunately, I was the only one who connected. It was like a "Three Stooges" moment. Fortunately for me the shark was more worn out than I was so it only lasted a few minutes of seemingly getting my arms pulled out of the socket...seemed like an hour.

Since we had 8 foot of freeboard (deck to water surface) we had to use a flying gaff and the anchor winch to pull the shark up and take him in.

I really don't like shark fishing because the line between who's catching who becomes a bit blurry.
