This is exactly what the European left is dreaming of. Personally I expect the complete withdrawal of US forces from Germany during the next decade since they have no function here anymore. It is simply not economical to maintain such big bases against political resistance without any need. If we search for similarities we should not fix it just on the millitary.
They all like to claim life is so much better in Europe. Wonder how great it will be when they actually have to assume responsibility for their own National Defense? For 60 years Europe shoves it self defense responsibilities (and costs) onto the USA and then whines when the USA does NOT give them veto power over our National Security Policy.
Tell you what Europe, when the 9-11 event happens in the EU, don't call on us to save you again.
I know, we will ride to the rescue again when it happens. We, as Americans, are stupid that way but MAN, just ONE time I wish the EU "Intellectuals" would quit whining! IF the EU wants to play a role in World Politics, the EUROPE, PAY THE COSTS to do so. All those US tanks, infantryman, aircraft and aircraft carriers et al we send everywhere are incredibly expense! Until you were willing to assume the REPONSIBLITY Europe DO NOT assume you have some sort of moral right to dictate policy to US.
We would be MORE then happy to share the burdens if Europe will QUIT WHINEING AND ASSUME some of them! We STILL send troops to the Balkans for you for Christ sake. IF you all cannot even manage YOUR OWN BACK YARD with out us, what are you all whining about?
