Christophobia: Atheism's Legacy
It's time to speak out against the "Christophobia" that's rampant on the Web. What is "Christophobia?" It's an irrational hatred of Christians/Christianity. If a Christian says that homosexuality is wrong, they are immediately branded homophobic.
If claiming something is wrong means that person has a phobia, then it seems reasonable to claim that atheist's exhibit a phobia against Christians/Christianity.
In two years of interacting with Web atheists, I have witnessed many things that should make a Christian more than a little frightened. It's time to call all atheists to account for not admonishing their brethren who exhibit irrational amounts of hostility towards Christians, be it in Chat Rooms, Bulletin Boards, Newsgroups, Web Sites, or through Email. I have NEVER seen one atheist admonish another atheist, no matter how virulent the attacks have become. I know that I will be accused of responding to the lowest common denominator of atheist on the Internet.
If I encountered this type of behavior rarely, I would agree. I have witnessed it in response to Christians who were exceedingly kind, as well as towards Christians who were sarcastic. I have witnessed it in relatively unsophisticated atheist sites such as the "Man is Man-Made" Board or the alt.atheism newgroup, as well as the much more sophisticated apologetics list that was linked from Miami Christian University or the Secular Web's "Topic Is Open" Board. True, the hostility is much more veiled and discreet on the more sophisticated forums, but it's there nonetheless.
The Solid Rock Ministries Web page is dedicated to one purpose, to show the reasonableness of Christianity as a worldview. The response that even this seemingly benign point of view creates in atheists, is the impetus for this article, and why I use the term "Christophobia".

Hatred? Is that the only word they know?
WHERE ARE YOU MINERAL MAN?????
I don't have a problem with Christians. I doubt that many athiests do.
But I have noticed that it's the actual doctrine of many Christian denominations to attempt to change my mind for me.
If I refuse, that doesn't make me hostile to Christians. I merely don't have their faith.
Bump for later
I'm on the opposite end of the spectrum from evangelical Christians on the gay issue, But I've long ranted against the abuse of the term "homophobia". Civil discourse between people who disagree doesn't begin with name-calling. Promoting the wide use, and even ABuse of the term "Christophobia" would help fix the problem. Those who get called "Christophobic" will promptly protest that they're not mentally ill, and THEN perhaps some meaningful dialogue can begin, as they are invited to defend their use of the term "homophobic".
which denominations are you referring to?
Atheists can be every bit as fanatic and zealous about their religion as those they criticize. Some thump their non-existant book every bit as loudly as some Christians thump the Bible.
The real question is why is the world hostile to Christ.
=-) Just means we're winning! Did this author mention writing mods and informing them someone that is right is also a troll to be "zotted?"
Why in the world would someone be frightened by them? Amused, maybe. Sad over their lost condition, perhaps. But fightened? Nah.
Fear not man who can only kill the body. Instead, fear Him who can cast both body and soul into hell.
In our defense: It's easy to get persecution complex when a president comes out and says that he doesn't think that Atheists can be true Americans.
There are different sorts of atheists, and different sorts of Christians. There is a loud group of militant atheists who are every bit as driven to convert everyone to their belief system as the most fervent evangelical Christian. They aren't just atheists, they are "theophobic", harboring an irrational belief that religion of any and all kinds is at the root of practically every bad thing that happens in the world, and they are determined to "save" the world by stamping it out.
Most athiests, true free thinkes, aren't really anti-Christian. The consistant anti-Christian are Rationalists of the Enlightenment mode of the left -- they wish to have Christianity succumb so the a religion of Secular Humanism can control.
Many Christian folk try to mistakenly try to argue a free thinker (beyond witness to their faith) thinking they are dealing with a closet Rationalist Totalitarian.
"The real question is why is the world hostile to Christ."
That's simple. Freewill gives people to use their own discretion....Atheists probably don't want a moral law to live under, therefore they are hostile towards Christ.
Actual quote and source, please?
"In our defense: It's easy to get persecution complex when a president comes out and says that he doesn't think that Atheists can be true Americans"
huh? who said THAT?
Really? I've chided other atheists right here on Free Republic if they get out of line.
I also have no animosity toward Christianity. I wish everyone to believe as they may. It's of no importance to me whether you believe in Christ or in Kali. It is your behavior that interests me. That is the only basis on which I will judge anyone.
Atheists are not some sort of group. We have no scriptures. We have no places we gather. We have no particular things in common with each other. Some atheists are conservatives, some liberal, some apolitical.
Some atheists are very clever; others are dumb as a post.
There's not much you can say, generally, about atheists without finding many exceptions.
