I think what he is saying is that we can't good people in Congress because of the pay, and they have made laws for themselves to get re-elected easier. Hence, the making of a career politician.
Right. But there's still no real and immediate accountability.
For example, if I run into the server room and trip over the cables (thereby causing hundreds of coworkers to lose their work), I should be hauled in front of my boss's boss for the traditional verbal caning.
If I do something wrong deliberately with serious consequences then I should be fired. Not in 6 months or a year, but on the spot.
It doesn't happen in Congress. So as much as I love Thomas Sowell, I really think that we would continue to get what we already have in politicians (as there never is "too much" money, even among Dems), only it would be worse.
Yes, that was my understanding. Unfortunately, a lot of these politicians are crooks at heart.
I don't know if increasing the pay would really deliver better people. You could never get term limits through at any rate.
