Undoubtedly that was the case. The idea that certain groups of humans, to wit Indian-Americans, were exempt from the normal violent and acquisitive actions of humans everywhere is absurd. And accounts of Cortez's Spaniards finding long lines of subject Indian tribes waiting to be slaughtered by their Aztec conquerors proves it.

Ahh...but those waiting to be slaughtered must certainly have been without violent and acquisitive impulses.

Exploited and opressed....I'm sure there is Marxist theory to explain it all.
