I can't even envision a scenario where this works in Bush's favor.

Use your imagination!

Imagine Madeline Halfbright debating with Rumsfeld.

And if they don't accept the invite, well Bush can always say he extended the invitation and welcomed their expertise.

This isn't the sort of thing one goes into and spouts silly partisan talking points. He's cast down the gauntlet. Frankly I see it as a bit of genius.

"I can't even envision a scenario where this works in Bush's favor."

I can, and if anyone cares to take the time to read the absolute best reason why we are fighting in the Middle East, I have seen no better analysis than this one by Mark Steyn, "It's the Demography Stupid "

http://www.opinionjournal.com/extra/?id=110007760

I printed it out and it is a long read - all of 9 pages, but it should be the topic of the day on FP. Basically it says - THEM is outpopulating US, and if we don't democratize these people, they will win out by waiting us out. The reasoning is even more startling than WMD.
Hopefully, this distinguished roundtable can get past the partisanship and face Steyn's facts which I'm sure our team is well aware of.
I strongly encourage anyone who enjoys firing back at the clueless liberals to read this article and load up on ammunition.
