< takes a bow >

And a well-deserved one. As for Drudge, not only is his title awful, but he discovered this news rather late since it was reported several days ago. We even mentioned it on the New Year's Day Dose thread.

She's still dead, even though she will be there, I am sure.

Why is this news? It was announced in a press briefing on the 30th of December:

On Thursday, January 5th, he will be meeting with the Secretary of State, Secretary of Defense, former Secretaries of State and former Secretaries of Defense in the Roosevelt Room. And that will be to discuss the war on terror and our challenges in Iraq and winning the war in Iraq

Big deal.

I wonder what Robert McNamara makes of the war?

Who could possibly give a flying eff what he thinks? About anything?

I didn't know Warren Christopher was dead (but wasn't he always?)

Kind of like Abe Vigoda and Keith Richards.

Until now, the former secretary of defense has avoided comment on the actions of that job's current occupant, Donald Rumsfeld. The two are often compared to each other in their autocratic leadership styles and in their technocratic, numbers-driven approaches to war. And their wars, of course, are often likened. But Robert McNamara has insisted in staying out of the fray.

He decided to break his silence on Iraq when I called him up the other day at his Washington office. I told him that his carefully enumerated lists of historic lessons from Vietnam were in danger of being ignored. He agreed, and told me that he was deeply frustrated to see history repeating itself.

"We're misusing our influence," he said in a staccato voice that had lost none of its rapid-fire engagement. "It's just wrong what we're doing. It's morally wrong, it's politically wrong, it's economically wrong."

While he did not want to talk on the record about specific military decisions made Mr. Rumsfeld, he said the United States is fighting a war that he believes is totally unnecessary and has managed to destroy important relationships with potential allies. "There have been times in the last year when I was just utterly disgusted by our position, the United States' position vis-à-vis the other nations of the world."

It has long been my belief that Carter's
-inability to anticipate the unrest in Iran,
-his betrayal of the Shah,
-his miserable failure in handling the hostage crisis,
-and his pathetic refusal to allow the Special Forces to perform the rescue mission that they were more than capable of successfully completing,
was the foundation for the Islamofascists ever bolder moves.

Had Carter done his job in 1978 and 1979, we probably wouldn't have to fight the global war on terror.

Probably asking for advise, whether ignored or not, on how to handle a situation. Sounds like a meeting on a tough problem, take advise, give advise to STFU.

I suspect you're right. Iraq is a red herring. The real subject will be "Iran...And What Would You Do About It?"

President Bush does not operate this way. He is a gentleman. W is a smart poker player, and me thinks that he is calling the libs to substantiate their opinions. W is setting them up. I did this all the time in business. Then I'd find ways to fire those who were not on board in growing the company.
