Volunteer...
That was my purpose of point number two. All of the men were volunteers to enlist. Then all were further volunteers for flight duty. Several crews were being shipped out every month for Korea. I recall none ever being AWOL. Perhaps there were but I recall none. A large number never returned.
However if you looked at the cooks, APs, motor pool, supply and such, they had more than a few AWOLs.

In the early 60's I was aboard the USS Independence. We had about six thousand young men aboard. We had several AWOL's at each port of call. Some were marines. These mostly had to do with the fact there were no females aboard. :) Ah, to be young again.

"I believe that choosing "conscientious objector" status should be tied to the loss of appropriate rights of citizenship."Pardon me...but that's plain dumb.
A lot of "conscientious objector's " served in Vietnam...usually as Medic's or Hospital Staff. They served their Nation....just not as trigger pullers.
I enlisted as a "conscientious objector" ....and served.
Shall I return my Purple Hearts now???

Remember. Some people had to volunteer for the Air Force. You couldn't draft 'em.
:) Just kidding, cynicom. Thanks for your service.

To answer your question, I've known many Soldiers over the years that avoid sick call or downplay their broken bones and keep on marching. The vast majority of Soldiers are proud to serve their country. Hell, we've got a lot of non-citizens who are proud to serve our country...these are two great stories that need to be followed accurately.

A web site with these boneheads names and photos would be nice. Then employers, girlfriends, new friends, etc. could check to see if their person in question is a deserter.
It could be called "NOT ON MY TEAM.COM" or "DESERTERS AND COWARDS.COM". I'm sure all those that know this goofs would be proud to see their name in lights.

More rant. More rant, Cobra. Well at least I admit it. My father was a WWII vet and beat my ass when I was practically a hippie in 1966. TODAY, my daughter has an MBA, working with the United States Military in cleaning up nasty sites filled with agent compounds which she is not allowed to discuss without military clearance.
Please do not lecture me as to how to raise children or support the United States Military.

Individuals trying to avoid service is nothing new. Try as they may, the left is just blowing smoke on this one. Every war has it's draft dodgers or cowards that joined expecting only bennies.
Besides, with the precedent set by Carter in '77, all they need do is wait this out, get some idiot Democrat back in office, accept the free and total amnesty and even run for the Senate and try for POTUS.
Personally, since they voided their contracts with the U.S., strip them of the US citizenship and send them wherever else they want to go. Who needs these lily livered cowards that will probbaly end up collecting welfare at our expense anyway?
