Not so. O-3 is pretty much a no-brainer promotion.
E-4 to 5 is when enlisted fellows who don't plan on making a career of it bail out as well.
Nothing new here. Are you in the military? You seem to have alot of neighbors who are.
From all that I've heard recruitment and retention is strong, and in the Reserve units with which I am personally familiar, there is very little turnover and lots of stability. I even know several former active duty IRRs who have gone back to the active Reserves and are happy to have done so.

Far be it for me to burst anyone's bubble, but I served in the US Air Force fifty years ago and we had malcontents who went AWOL (away without leave) maimed themselves, committed suicide, pretended to be crazy (some were), put in the stockade (military jail) and generally displayed antisocial behavior. The interesting thing about that was, there was no war going on at the time. It was just a few years after the Korean war ended, and many years before the Vietnam war began.
I would like to point out to the self important journalists (we called them reporters then) that several notable rotten apples appear in their barrels from time to time. I'll spare them the shame of naming some of them.

How about a story about the many troops who don't report to sick call right before deployment because they are afraid of being held back?
I know of one soldier who did that....

I wouldn't trust it either. She's a flower child. Of course, if all I have to do is make stuff up to get a Pulitzer Prize, I'm game.

I will try not to worry...as I pray each night alone. For the day when my soldier...returns safely home. In my prayers too.

Two things come to mind.
During Korean War, when AWOLS mounted, military resorted to putting them in shackles and flying them to Korea as replacements in the front lines. The AWOL rate dropped dramatically.
On the other hand, I do not recall any AF people that went AWOL, all being volunteers. No one found religion overnight.

Remember, we have a voluntary Army now. The guys want to serve. The few AWOLs we have now have mostly to do with domestic family problems.
