Mexico demands US probe fatal border shooting

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - Mexico demanded a U.S. investigation on Monday into the death of an undocumented Mexican shot by a U.S. Border Patrol agent as he tried to cross into California last week.

Raul Martinez, a spokesman for the U.S. Border Patrol in San Diego, confirmed that an agent had fired on a man on Friday as he tried to cross the border near San Diego, after the would-be immigrant had thrown rocks at him.

The unidentified man crossed back into Mexico, where he later died of his injuries in a hospital.

"The Mexican government is demanding an investigation of the facts," presidential spokesman Ruben Aguilar said at a news conference.

The shooting came weeks after a U.S. lawmaker proposed a controversial plan to fortify part of the U.S.-Mexico border with a high-tech wall to stop illegal immigrants.

The move was slammed by the Mexican government, which has long sought an agreement with Washington to formalize the status of millions of Mexicans living illegally in the United States and regulate the flow of immigrants heading north.

The shooting "shows once again that only a law that guarantees organized, legal and respectful entry (to the United States) can solve the problems posed by migration," Aguilar said.

Each year, an unknown number of Mexicans attempt to cross the deserts and rivers marking the 2,000-mile (3,200-km) border in search of work in the United States.

The U.S. Border Patrol arrested almost 1.2 million undocumented immigrants making the journey last year, while at least 464 died en route, many of heat exposure.

Lesson: Don't throw rocks at border patrolmen. In dim light they could be indistinguishable from hand grenades.

Put THAT little lesson in the comic books handed out to those who are preparing to cross the border into the US without benefit of additional documentation.

Yo, Ruben. Why doesn't the Mexican government demand an investigation into why so many of its citizens are willing to risk life and limb just to get out of crap-hole of a country it governs?

More immediate lesson: the Border Patrol agent needs more time at the range. The next perp should be shot better, so that he won't be able to crawl back.

The USA demands that invaders are to be arrested and put under a tent city jail or elsewhere.

Hmmm (takes out notebook)

He came across the border here...

(noting location for future border fence)

Then he picked up one of these rocks, and threw it at the ICE officer, who was over there...

(noting how far inside the international border, the incursion had gone)

So, in order to prevent this from happening again, we need to move the border fence forward approximately ... how much?

I've seen this same lead-in headline "Mexico Demands yada yada". Why don't Americans DEMAND that Mexico get off it's lazy backside and help us with the border problem? Instead of pushing these illegals on us, how about working on improving YOUR dingbatty country and finesse those massive resources you are giving away to the drug lords and Vincente Fox.

"The Mexican Government can -- CLEAR OFF!"

The U.S. will get down on it's knees and kiss their Mexican butts.

They just come here to throw the rocks that U.S. citizens won't throw.

Lots of people (rightly) slamming Mexico for its "demand", but of course, Mexico won't hear us unless our government says it to Mexico. But it won't, because it hasn't heard us loudly enough. Hence, we need more Gilchrists running in '06.

The shooting only shows that we are rapidly losing patience with our neighbors who seek to enter our country clandestinely. Keep it up amigos. We have lots of ammo.

Mr. Fox
1)Mexican threw rock or rocks at Border patrol agent.
2) Border patrol agent shot rock thrower who then returned from whence he came

Investigation complete, thank you for your concern.

It just occurred to me that if the U.S. mail to Mexico could be scanned for financial instruments and we could suspend all personal electronic transfers to Mexico the immigration problem would be greatly diminished. Anyone got an opinion on this?

How about we investigate the numerous allegations that Mexican army units have crossed into the US and fired on the border patrol.
