Mexico: Walls won't stop migrants

MEXICO CITY, Mexico (AP) -- The death of a Mexican man shot by U.S. authorities while trying to sneak into California proves that extending border walls will not curb illegal immigration, President Vicente Fox's office said Monday.

Guillermo Martinez died Saturday in a Tijuana hospital, a day after he was shot by a U.S. Border Patrol agent near a metal wall separating that city from San Diego, according to prosecutors in Baja California state.

Authorities said Martinez was on the Mexican side of the border at the time, but may have picked up rocks and made motions as if to throw them at the U.S. agent.

Baja California Gov. Eugenio Elorduy said in a statement that U.S. officials were investigating the shooting. But U.S. authorities on Monday could not confirm that.

At his briefing with reporters in Mexico City, Fox spokesman Ruben Aguilar said the government "laments and condemns" Martinez's death, and is demanding an investigation.

"This occurrence does no more than provide evidence that only a law that guarantees legal entry and is respectful of human rights can resolve the migratory problem both countries face," Aguilar said.

"Pretty much tells me we've got a justifiable shooting here...and a marksmanship medal to be awarded."

Well, this particular shooting may not be justified. Generally a policeman on one side of the border would not be justified in fearing for his life because somebody on the other side of the border has a rock.

But, once they cross the border then they would be in the middle of a criminal act and the police should be entitled to use force if need be to apprehend.

If the wall won't stop it, they shouldn't have any objection, now, should they?

Then they're luckier than many injured who died without treatment --and I'll continue to warn people about being stranded and sick in Mexico. Also to watch out for dangerous small aircraft.

I'll continue to warn people about being stranded and sick in Mexico.

People should heed that advice. A few years back a friend had to have an emergency appendectomy in Puerto Vallarta. He contracted a bad staph infection there, probably due to unclean surgical instruments. The hospital wouldn't release him until they got paid.

Hopefully they were environmentalists medeling where they didn't belong.

We have many friends that go to Mexico for medical care which is not only a lot cheaper but they claim is far superior.

As far as your hatred for aircraft I hope that the next one that goes down lands on you.

Duly noted. I stay away from daffy and drunken pilots--and hope they stay away from me.

Poor guy, he made a fatal mistake by going to Mexico.

Corrupt Mexico strikes again!

Several million illegal aliens (mostly Mexicans) here in California cost us 10 billion bucks every year, and not one of them is ever turned away at a hospital, and that's why our hospitals are going broke.

Good point. It bears repeating:

If it won't be effective, why's he so worried about the idea?

The Mexican government version:

"Authorities said Martinez was on the Mexican side of the border at the time, but may have picked up rocks and made motions as if to throw them at the U.S. agent."

The USBP version:

"Raul Martinez, a spokesman for the U.S. Border Patrol in San Diego, confirmed that an agent had fired on a man on Friday as he tried to cross the border near San Diego, after the would-be immigrant had thrown rocks at him.

The unidentified man crossed back into Mexico, where he later died of his injuries in a hospital."

Mexico's government is running no shortage on liars.

Sure they will! The wall will definitely stop the Mexican army from crossing into the US.

If walls won't stop them, perhaps we should consider other measures.

Billing Mexico for the apprehension, incarceration, trial, and expulsion costs might be a good start. We could take the fee out of any assets Mexico has in this Country or any funds we send them. That's a good start.

We could escalate from there.

But stop them we must - one way or the other - or we will soon be bankrupt - paying China for everything we consume, and sending whatever is left over south of the border with illegal paychecks earned by these illegal criminal alien invaders.

Corrupt Mexican government officials need El Norte outlet to prevent civil unrest and war within their own country. They will push, finagale, and outright defy US convetions to secure the border, eventually up to the point of war with the US, IMO.
