FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE December 29, 2005

Governor Blagojevich announces new labor laws that ensure fair wages and better conditions for thousands of workers

Strengthened laws effective Jan 1 will protect over 300,000 day laborers..

CHICAGO – Thousands of workers across Illinois will be better protected against abuses by unlawful day labor agencies, will enjoy improved working conditions and will be protected in their rights to fair wages, thanks to two new labor laws signed by Governor Rod R. Blagojevich last summer and that go into effect January 1, 2006. The strengthened Day and Temporary Labor Services Act will make Illinois the most aggressive state in the nation regarding protecting day laborers against illegal wage deductions and other abuses, and imposing stiffer penalties against violators. The amended Prevailing Wage Act increases penalties against contractors who repeatedly fail to pay construction workers the prevailing wage.

“For thousands of day laborers in Illinois, better protections and better working conditions mean being able to bring home their hard-earned money and provide for their families. By strengthening the Day Labor Services Act we will be able to go after abusive agencies who cheat day laborers of their wages or leave them unprotected on the job,” said Gov. Blagojevich. “Starting January 1, we are also ensuring that workers are paid no less than the prevailing wage on public works, leveling the playing field for honest, law-abiding contractors who follow the rules,” said the Governor.

The amended Day and Temporary Labor Services Act, sponsored by State Rep. Cynthia Soto (D-Chicago) and State Sen. Miguel del Valle (D-Chicago) will protect over 300,000 day laborers across the state by providing the Illinois Department of Labor (IDOL) with stronger enforcement tools, imposing stiffer penalties on violators, and implementing important protections for vulnerable day and temporary laborers.

Rod Blagojevich has a new illegal alien give away every other week now.

The Illinois State Police has been starting to shut down Illinois Minuteman Meetings by going to the American Legions and the local Chief of Police and asking them to NOT let the meeting happen.

Since this act will price these workers out of the market, will the governor's next proposal require that construction companines hire non-English-Speaking immigrant workers at the point of a gun?

I thought the idea of having illegal aliens here was so that we could exploit them. If they're treated well, Americans might want those jobs.

Uhh ... public works jobs are now employing illegals? Is anyone in Illinois a teensy bit upset about that?

Hey--when things get good enough, maybe all the illegals will head for Chicago, and the rest of us will be in better shape!

I guess Rod is part of the building of the "new America" too.

We are now one of the largest Spanish-speaking nations in the world. We're a major source of Latin music, journalism and culture.

Just go to Miami, or San Antonio, Los Angeles, Chicago or West New York, New Jersey ... and close your eyes and listen. You could just as easily be in Santo Domingo or Santiago, or San Miguel de Allende.

For years our nation has debated this change -- some have praised it and others have resented it. By nominating me, my party has made a choice to welcome the new America.

Yes it is true. We are fortunate to have run across this info and are researching it. We got the name of the State Police District Commander who started the ball rollingfrom the Chief of Police in the town we had the meeting set up in. We are going to try to have a meeting with him to see where he is coming from.

As you can see it might be the Governor himself who is putting the stop on us......MORE will be revealed!!

This may be a play for the illegal alien vote. Certainly it's a play for the bleeding heart leftist vote and the Hispanic vote.

But it may also be a favor to the labor unions. If you put through minimum wages and other benefits for illegals, you reduce the difference in pay from legal workers, and maybe reduce the number of illegal, non-union workers.

Either that, or maybe they will unionize the illegals.

This really isn't a move to benefit illegal aliens. Though it looks that way and has all the political impact.

What it really does is further union interests. Bet your bottom dollar union wages will be the "prevailing wages" and that this will be applied not just to illegals but legal citizens working outside a union.

So you have to pay union wages whether or not you hire union folks and if you don't the unions rat you out and the machine fines your business into extinction.

That's really sad--but I guess the voters of Chicago have gotten what they voted for.

Do you see any signs that this will turn voters away from Blogojevich?
