In most places, $9/hr is just a survival wage. Can't afford a new car on that--unless your living at home with mommy and daddy. American cars made today are NOT junk--although quality did suffer in the 70s and 80s. All my cars are American made and I keep 'em for 8 years. I sell them not because they don't work (they do), but 'cause I want something new. I gave my sister my Olds a few years back--its still running well after 12 years.

The 70's and 80's were the union heyday and my unionized relatives in MI all bought new cars every 3 years. The rest of us had to suffer through breakdowns at 3 years and one month (literally with our Chevette). Then we wised up and bought a datsun and then a toyota.

I agree that 9 bucks will just cover a cheap apartment and not a car payment but there are some regional factors behind that $9. Starting wages at the car parts plant here (NW VA) is $10 with only HS diploma required. The plant is ISO certified and very efficient.

Where I live $9/hr is not even survival. It would be just the pay for 1 of several jobs I would have to get. Gov't likes importing...they can charge for import taxes, duties, etc. It makes them more powerful so that they can use their power to regulate american manufacturing out of existence.
