Reminds me of something C.S. Lewis (I think probably in the 40s) about the choice "between Arthur and Mordred" getting always clearer and more unavoidable, a theme further developed in That Hideous Strength.
There was something too in the Vermont Royster column the WSJ traditionally runs for Christmas (also originally appearing in the 40s) about the danger that men would again fall into the darkness of believing that government was supreme.
