California nominee for top court praised

California Supreme Court candidate Carol Corrigan won high praise Friday from a State Bar commission and most lawyers, judges and others commenting on her nomination in advance of next week's confirmation hearing.

Corrigan, 57, a state appeals court justice in San Francisco since 1994, was nominated by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger Dec. 9 to succeed Justice Janice Rogers Brown. Brown resigned from the state's high court June 30 to become a federal appeals court judge in Washington, D.C.

Corrigan, Schwarzenegger's first Supreme Court nominee, has been described by most legal commentators as a moderate Republican close to the ideological center of the current court. Brown was the court's most conservative member.

Corrigan is a former Alameda County prosecutor who was first appointed to the bench by Gov. George Deukmejian in 1987 and was named to the appeals court by Gov. Pete Wilson.

Her nomination will be considered Wednesday by the state Commission on Judicial Appointments, consisting of Chief Justice Ronald George, Attorney General Bill Lockyer and the state's senior presiding appellate justice, Joan Dempsey Klein of Los Angeles. If confirmed, Corrigan would join the court for arguments the following week.

"moderate Republican"

Oh great, not another moderate Republican. I'm picturing a female David Souter or Tony Kennedy.

Too bad Arnie couldn't have picked another Janice Rogers Brown, this new judge doesnt seem worthy to fill her seat.

" first appointed to the bench by Gov. George Deukmejian in 1987"

Deukmejian was a fairly conservative Governor, so I take comfort in that. Also, she's a former District Attorney. She's no Janice Rogers Brown, but she won't be the worst of the judges.

Perhaps it was Maria's turn to make the decision.

Assuming you missed the previous several threads on this same article I'll reiterate.

Schwarzenegger had little choice. The appointment is decided by a three member panel, two of which are Democrats, one with a rumored history of cross dressing. At the time of Brown's appointment there were two Republican's on the panel.

Ronald George, Chief Justice of the Ca Supreme Court is a Republican, and the gal on the 2nd Court of Appeals is a democrat, I presume, that leaves .. :-D

The images that come to mind.

Happy New Year.

No, I was aware, although I don't live in CA. That's why I said "Too bad Arnie couldn't have picked another Janice Rogers Brown."
