I just had a thought...
You know how they now have game hunting via the Internet? Why doesn't the U.S. Army set up rifles in all the Iraq hot spots and let us taxpayers help them out by picking off insurgents over the Internet every time one of them is dumb enough to get in range? The Army could keep moving the rifles around to keep them guessing.

Vietnam sniper slogans

"7.62 - Reach out and touch someone."

".50 Cal. - When you care enough to send the very best."

"Dont try to run. You'll only die tired."

"Staff Sgt Gilliland, 28, who hunted squirrels in Double Springs, Alabama from the age of five before progressing to deer - and then people."

Hmm,Alabama?.....first state I heard of that allowed hunting of people. Is that just for residents? Or do they sell out-of state licenses?

"A single shot hit the Iraqi in the chest and killed him instantly."

Great Shot!

...but the "killed instantly" part seems a little hard to believe. The now-deceased Islamofacist could have been on the pavement, fully conscious, contemplating how he had been "paid back in full" for a minute or two before bleeding-out.

"the Iraqi insurgent who had just killed an American soldier. His quarry stood nonchalantly"

This news item has a touch of typical anti-US Brit arrogance to it. The idea presented is that terrorists kill US Troops easy and stand around "nonchalantly".

I really doubt that was the case. Obviously this terrorist was waiting for another American to come help the first and get a second kill. I seriously don't believe he was just standing there "nonchalantly".

Americans have to be on guard around idiot UK journalists as much as they have to be on guard around terrorists, both will take a cheap shot.

The reporter made sure to include enough information in the story so that the shoulders, their families and friends can be located by our enemies information technology people and targeted for special operations. The media is not on our side.

Y'all can argue about the weapon and the shot: I'm just thrilled to my toes that he killed the bastard. Only problem: He didn't know what hit him.

I thought military sniper rifles were designed with a range of about 2000 meters. I'm reading a Vietnam sniper's book right now that talks about 1000 meter shots being rather common.

Am I missing something?

"One member of the team, a corporal from Newfoundland, said on his first night in combat he and his partner got an al-Qaeda machine gun in their sights as it was hailing bullets down on U.S. troops below. Crawling up into a good position, they set up their .50-calibre rifle -- the McMillan Tac-50, a weapon the corporal compares to having superhuman power in your hands. "Firing it feels like someone slashing you on the back of your hockey helmet with a hockey stick." (These are the rifles fitted with Lilja .50 caliber barrels and Nightforce NXS scopes.)"
