Kidnappers of former German diplomat arrested (German hostages in Yemen freed)

Berlin (dpa) - Four kidnappers who abducted a retired German government deputy minister this week have been arrested in Yemen, a spokesman for the Yemeni embassy in Berlin said on Saturday.

The spokesman said the four alleged kidnappers would be brought before a court.

The announcement came as Juergen Chrobog, 65, his wife Majda and three adult sons were being flown to safety in the port city of Aden after their release by tribesmen.

The spokesman added that leaders of the tribe had signed an accord with the Yemeni government that led to the release of the family. The accord provided for five members of a rival tribe to be arrested.

Chrobog, formerly state secretary of the Berlin Foreign Office, would stay over till Sunday, New Year's Day, in the port city of Aden, the spokesman said. Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh would travel there to meet them.

The Germans will give this guy 50 years but they set free the terrorist who killed the Navy diver.

This is good news, but as long as Germany continues to pay off kidnappers Germans will continue to be kidnapped.

Which?

It wasn´t an official trip. He and his family were there privately - and not as reported earlier on invitation of Yemeni officials. They did a tourism tour on a road that is usually considered to be safe, according to the Yemeni officials. Not that unusual, but also not very common.

Sorry, but first, the maximum time for imprisonment in Germany is 15 years, except for "life", which usually means 15-18 years. And secondly, me thinks that the Yemeni want to punish these guys by their own.

That seemed peculiar to me, too. I didn't know Yemen had tourism.

If you worked in the State Dept you also had lots of friends in foreign countries. And if you were there to do some business, why should you take your family with you??

Agreed. Yemen is a pit. Why would someone take their family there for a vacation or tour?
