AUSTIN Speculation mounted Friday that Republican Comptroller Carole Keeton Strayhorn will abandon her party primary and try to challenge Gov. Rick Perry as an independent candidate.
"This isnt just bar talk anymore," said Harvey Kronberg, editor of the political newsletter Quorum Report. "This is ratcheting up almost to conventional wisdom that she is going to run as an independent candidate."
The Strayhorn for Governor campaign would not confirm or deny the speculation, but aides said she will announce her intentions Monday - the last day to file for state political office ahead of the 2006 elections.
Strayhorn spokesman Mark Sanders would say only that Strayhorn still considers herself a Republican and is in the race to stay. "Carole Keeton Strayhorn is a candidate for governor," he said. "She is a Republican."
Running, let alone winning, as an independent candidate for governor is highly unusual. Sam Houston, last elected in 1859, was the last independent to occupy the Governors Mansion - a fact that Strayhorn is sure to repeat often if she does take that route. In Name Only
Portrait of Comptroller Strayhorn
The rumor mill is running rampant.... But Monday is decision day.
Jumping into the lifeboat that still has room.
Carole Keeton McClellan
That would make Perry's victory in the general election even easier. She's likely to finish 4th if she does that. She ought to just run as a democrat. Then she'd have a good chance of finishing second.
At least she hasn't lost her looks as she's aged. Strayhorn is as attactive as McClellan or Rylander. Do you have any pictures of Keeton?
She's in a no win sitution. Susan Combs would still beat her in the GOP primary if she decided to go ahead a seek re-election as Comptroller. That's what she gets for acting like a Rat and picking fights against other Republicans. You just don't tick off the base and think you can make it to higher office. John McCain will find that out in 2008.
Why is this woman doing this? What is her issue, that remains unaddressed in her mind by the incumbent? What is her raison d'etre? What gives her meaning?
It doesn't really matter. She is a moth headed toward a political bugzapper no matter what she does.
BZZZZZZT.
It's obviously personal between her and Perry and what she is really saying is:
a) she can't beat Perry in a GOP Primary.
b) she'd rather the party lose to a Democrat than have Perry re-elected.
I always knew she was RINO. Now, she's just offering proof. It's why I never voted for her, even when she had an (R) next to her name. She's been red-lined from ever getting my vote, just like McCain has.
Carole Keeton "Your Name Here" Strayhorn must finally be realizing that she is DOA for any office in Texas if she registers for the Republican primary.
She will never make it to the first base. A waste of money and everybody's time.
She should just shut up and get back to her job as a Controller for Texas and try to work at it! That's what she is getting paid for!
Do you have any pictures of Keeton?
I am glad her radio ads have stopped. I don't think she did herself any good with them.
"I'm one tough grandma, one tough crime fighter for Texas".
I could see her dressed like Superman, perched on a window ledge of a tall building.
How many times has she been married and what happened to the husbands? I'll bet she ran them off with a big stick.
Why is this woman doing this? What is her issue, that remains unaddressed in her mind by the incumbent? What is her raison d'etre? What gives her meaning?
I have no idea how many times she has been married.
It just seems to me that Carole Keeton ___________ has a different name in the blank every four years.
This just opens the door for Kinky Friedman.
