It wasnt a particularly good year for conservative cinema. It rarely is. Yet alongside the cavalcade of ideology, mediocrity and stupidity that is Hollywood today, a few gems shone forth dazzlingly.
What is a conservative film?
Lets start with what it isnt. Its not about men with bulging biceps and even bigger guns. Its not cartoonish action heroes. It isnt revenge tales masquerading as heroism.
Conservative cinema does more than entertain; movies that do no more are visual candy. It instructs and inspires.
Conservative films celebrate virtue. They tell timeless tales of individuals overcoming all manner of adversity to achieve true greatness. Theyre about honesty, loyalty, courage and patriotism. Theyre concerned with conservatisms cardinal values faith, family and freedom.
If I were to list the best conservative movies of the last decade, they would include: Lord of The Rings: The Return of The King (2003) Open Range (2003), LA Confidential (1997), Mel Gibsons The Patriot (2000), and Spiderman, I and II (2002 and 2004). But also some quieter films, like last years In Good Company and The Family Man (2000) would make my list.
Here, then, are my choices for The 10 Best Conservative Films of 2005.
1. Cinderella Man The miraculous, 1930s comeback of boxer James J. Braddock became a metaphor for Americas struggle to get to its feet after the pounding it took in the Great Depression.
SNIP
2. King Kong King Kong is the blockbuster movie of the 2005 holiday season. How often is a remake better than the original? Peter Jacksons King Kong beats both the 1933 original and the eminently forgettable 1976 remake.

I cashed in this years "coin jar" and went to Blockbuster and picked Serenity up out of the sale rack based positive on intenet buzz. I enjoyed it enough that I'll probably go get the firefly series. Not a great movie, but I enjoyed it alot. No libs preaching at me in the movie. :-)
Soory, Mr. Feder just lost his seat at the table of authority of what is a conservative movie.
1. Spiderman 2 - A story about sacrificing for the benefit of others, and righteousness winning the day
2. War of the Worlds - In a capitalistic economy, we can buy camcorders that can withstand an electro-magnetic storm that knocks out all power and yet still works.
3. Chicken Little - Rugged individualism always wins
I didn'see much else this year, so it stays at only 3.
Did you like Kingdom of Heaven?
We just rented Serenity a few days ago.
Is that captain part of the Firefly cast? We could hardly understand a thing he said, with his Canadian mumble.
He has sort of a Han Solo appeal, but could you understand him?
I did like it. I heard the conservative outcry. But the previews looked good & so did the cast. Don't have a clue on it's accuracy or lack thereof. It was a big screen movie for sure and the couple we were with and my date (all conservative) thought it was very good. And we are all.. well, let's say "mature".. (older n dirt?)
I think Matt & Trey singlehandedly ruined Rent's box office.
Yes, but the context of the movie (and I forget the exact line) seemed much more PETA-ish than related to abortion. Something about how the clients didn't want to know how they were getting the parts.
Sin City didn't grab me. I don't like Mickey Roarke, even as a hero, but for whatever reason I just didn't care for it.
Course, so was "Lion King."
For that alone, it deserves "Picture of the Year."
Who woke up from a degenerate lifetyle? Kim Bassinger's character seemed more worn out from it, rather than awakened.
I'm quite sure. But theater is a different experience than the movies. Just look at the non-Zero-Mostel version of The Producers.
That's not notably conservative, I think. Good story, though.
Heheh, well, it's on my NOT list at any rate, in any form. I'd go see "Less Than Zero" again before I'd go so "Rent."
...you know people who can learn something from penguins.
;-)
"Have you seen CRASH?"
I haven't seen it but 1 of the talk show hosts, John Carlson, on a conservative talk radio station here (570 KVI-Fox Radio) was saying last night that it was his favorite film of the year and some of his listeners agreed. Said the cast, acting and screenplay (original) were all excellent. I'll have to check it out.
That's funny,I didn't notice the captn's accent at all. Yes the cast is the same for the movie and the series.
I thought "Crash" was the weird movie they made years ago about people who got off on car crashes.
So if you saw the series first, you'd already be familiar with the cast of the movie. That's kind of what we figured.
If you'd never seen that captain before, you'd know what I mean. None of us watching could understand him, but the rest of it was compelling. I really liked the assassin, from beginning to end, especially the end.
