New Orleans -- The city's police chief Thursday came out in support of an independent review board to investigate police shootings, a demand made by black ministers after a black man was killed by officers earlier this week.

Police Superintendent Warren Riley met with the ministers for nearly two hours and said afterward that he will back their request to the City Council for an independent review process.

The meeting came three days after police shot and killed Anthony Hayes, 38, who was wielding a hunting knife. Hayes' confrontation with 18 officers — but not the shooting itself — was taped by at least three bystanders. Relatives told TV reporters that Hayes battled schizophrenia.

It's acts like these that give LEOs a bad reputation or maybe a deserved one.

How many options do 18 armed men have against a nut with a knife?

No tasers -- No Dog -- No web shooting shotgun & no shooting in the leg or arm

We don't see the end, but up to this point I don't see any officer's life being threatened.

Wait and see attitude on this one.

a) Independent review boards rarely ever have the authority to implement changes and often find their recommendations ignored by a entrenched bureaucracy.

b) Few (including myself ) know what the protocol is for LEO's when facing a knife (or bomb) welding lunatic. I'm no fan of law enforcement but I think too often Monday morning quarterbacking in these instances is often the product of emotional reaction and brings little to the table in the way of intelligent analysis.

One less guy to feed in the prison system. Why should the police risk their lives to tackle him? He had a knife and was trying to stab them. Too bad for him, a real bad decision on his part. Maybe others will take notice and obey the law.

I agree, one less mouth to feed.

I would never expect them to try to tackle a nut with a knife.

However, I bet after a taser or two or a few dog bites that ole boy would have lost the knife.

Looks to me that he dropped it with the method used. I'm very tired of hearing of the criminals rights and how we should be kind to them.
