Banning any sort of weapons won't offset the evil in a human heart. They could ban guns, knives, baseball bats, screwdrivers, hammers...etc..etc...in ad nauseum.

People would beat each other to death with their fists and tear each other apart with their teeth. The strong would still prey on the weak.

Ah, but that's the point. Guns stand in the way of the strong preying upon the weak. A pistol is deadly in any hands, which is exactly what makes it useful.
