I also checked with the 'urban legends' websites to verify that most of what this article says is, in fact, true & have included a link to Snopes for the source URL
Please read & pass along to others...perhaps the liberal press?
Oops, left out the Snopes link:

No source link that I can see
Thanks! Now we know the "rest of the story". (This article sounds like something Paul Harvey might have done!)
I believe they have reopened the monument after "hardening" the security (as I recall from FR threads?!). One was a 3'-4' wall/bench, but it has sloping lawn up to the monument so it looked real nice.

Those whacky Masons.
Scottish Rite strikes again. :-)

Thanks and bookmarked.
The set-up of DC is one of Masonic design. It holds many secrets. There is occultic symbolism behind these monuments. The meaning of these obelisks can be found if one studies Ancient Egypt. Remember...the majority of the founding fathers were Freemasons, and initiates of the Occult, as well as awe-inspiring Christians.
Initiates of the occult? Cuboid-thinking? Can you 'splain to me?
Ummmmm. OK.
Statues are now "idols".
Got it.
I'll get back to you.
The west face read: "Corner Stone laid on bed of foundation, July 4, 1848. First stone at height of 152 feet laid August 7, 1880. Capstone set December 6, 1884"; and the east face read "LAUS DEO." The north and south faces contained names of the commission and the key men in the work of completion. Although weatherbeaten, the inscription is still visible.

I thought and have always heard that the height limit was pegged to the Capitol.
Take a good look at a DC map. At the center of DC is the Elipse. South of the Elipse is the Washinton Monument. North of the Elipse is the White House.
Ok, now... DC is a Diamond pointing north, south, east and west. As you zoom in to the town, look at the original city streets. You will notice the the White House is at a point at an intersection, the Elipse is the ball at the point. Now, look to the left, you will see a circle (rotary) at the end of another point. You will begin to see that the White house is the point of a Pentagram. Upside down Pentagram. Explain that one... I am sure only the Masons of days gone bye, know that one...
see my 17 :)
As a Christmas present from my brother, i received the book "The Secret Architechture of Our Nations Capital". It talks about this in detail. A very interesting read so far.
I don't know which symbol, sign, or suggestion those streets are supposed to have, all I know is I have to drive them every day and you all should feel sorry for me.
