Cornyn Speaks On Immigration (opposes a fence)
The Monitor ^ | December 28,2005 | Victoria Hirschberg

Posted on 12/28/2005 5:36:33 AM PST by Reaganwuzthebest

MISSION — U.S. Sen. John Cornyn said Tuesday that building a fence along the southwest border is unrealistic and ultimately would not deter illegal immigration into the United States.

Cornyn, R-Texas, was in Mission on Tuesday to discuss flood control and the Rio Grande Valley levee system, but spoke briefly with the media about immigration issues and his plan to allow workers into the country legally but temporarily. He said he would not support a bill calling for a security fence — which could start in California and end in Brownsville — although the U.S. House of Representatives approved the measure last week. The Senate will discuss the measure when they reconvene next year, and Cornyn said immigration would be a pertinent issue.

He expects a compromise between the Senate and the House on immigration bills.

"(The wall) is a 19th century solution to a 21st century problem," Cornyn said, calling for a more comprehensive immigration plan. Millions of immigrants, both documented and undocumented, cross daily through the southwest border and Cornyn said his bill permits workers to enter for a set time period, calls for increased enforcement at the border and more investigations into employers that hire illegal immigrants.

Hidalgo Mayor John David Franz said he would oppose any wall cutting through his border city.

"I think we need to be looking at amicable solutions," he said. "(A wall) would put us back 100 years. A wall isn’t going to solve anything."

"Notice how a fence became a wall in Cornyn's and the mayor's comments?"

Correction...it was only called a wall by the mayor. There is nothing in that article attributing Cornyn as calling it a wall.

Good fences make good neighbors. Cornyn blew any chance he might have had of being a "dark horse" candidate in 08.

Exactly. Look for "wall" to be the new term in the media and by politicians for a border fence.

It's time for the House to start selecting Senators again instead of state wide elections.

"We are better off with the status quo then we are with a guest worker plan because once we open that Pandora's box we will never get it shut."

Bingo. It's near all or nothing. The bill, even without a fence, is a good bill, so if senators strip it out, oh well (I hope they don't.) But no amount of border security in a bill is worth another failed guest worker amnesty. I'd rather a bill that ends birthright citizenship, builds a fence on the entire border, ends catch-and-release and punishes employers harshly fail than pass with an amnesty.

It's up to the house to stand up and demand no amnesty because it sure as hell ain't going to be the senate or our president. And I know for a fact that an amnesty will fail in the house, the votes aren't there.

So it's going to be the status quo, which really isn't right. The senate won't pass a bill without an amnesty and the house won't pass one with an amnesty.

The Rio Grande River is the border between Mexico and Texas. They have to cross the river - hence the old name of 'wetback'. How can you build a fence/wall in a river? Flooding can also be a problem - it IS a RIVER.

A wall/fence might work great for Arizona, New Mexico, and California, but it does not seem viable for Texas.

I want to see illegals caught and deported. I live in NE TX - long way from the border - and see more and more spanish speaking businesses and signs. Why are our ballots in English and in Spanish? Why do the automatic checkout lanes in grocery stores and WalMart ask you to choose a language?

Of course he does. The filthy rich don't care about the difficulties of the average man.

Now that you mention it, the term "wall" is actually implied by the writer of the article. Neither the mayor or Cornyn appears to have said the word "wall".

He's right

I'd rather see a Texmex Canal stretching from San Diego to the Gulf of Mexico. 3 miles wide, cable of hauling ships in both directions and then charge shipping companies a toll fee to use it.

If Ancient Egyptions can build pyramids, we can build this canal. It just takes will power.

Agreed, the status quo is far more desirable than Cornyn's solutions.

They have this all figured out. Give us some "tough" rhetoric, and when they work on the House bill they'll get rid of the wall/fence, enforcement, etc. and give Bush what HE has always wanted!
We are going to have to FIGHT this!
NO bill will be better than what the Senate and the WH wants.

A fence, unless electrified, will not deter the coyotes bringing illegals in.
Enforce the laws on the books and clarify the law (Constitutions Citizenship Clause) re illegals' children born in this country.

"Hidalgo Mayor John David Franz said he would oppose any wall cutting through his border city.

1. Who cares what a MAYOR says?

2. Who is he to determine what sets anything back 100 years?
