EDWARDS AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. (AFPN) -- With the F-22A Raptor's initial operational capability declaration Dec. 15 came the capstone of a process that began 76 months earlier, in August 1997, when a C-5 Galaxy landed here and taxied down the expansive "Contractor's Row" with several crates and boxes in its cargo bay to what isnow known as the F-22A Combined Test Force.

We joke about our missions against the raptor because they can be fairly boring. We fly to the range. Die. Go to the tanker. Go back out. Die. Go back to the tanker. Go back out. Die a third time. Then we go home, LOL. Iran, Korea, China, Take note.

Kind of a discouraging attitude.
We exercised with a carrier - Ranger rings a bell - in 1978 as a hostile trying to get within missle range of the ship (we were a P-3B sub hunter).
We were intercepted by F-14s every time and never got within radar range...
But we went back out of the area and tried something else. We went in high, went in low, looped way around the expected ingress route... and got great pictures of F-14s killing us.
But we kept trying.

"God help anyone who goes up against the Raptor."
An F-16C pilot, in response to flying simulated combat missions against the F-22A.
Stated first hand to me when describing the exercise (in futility).

F-22A Raptor. I don't know about the name 'Raptor'. Sounds kind of aggressive. Wouldn't the 'world community' prefer we name the plane something like the F-22 Love Bomb, or F-22 Spotted Owl.

first aircraft in history to successfully drop a joint direct attack munition from an internal weapons bay while flying supersonic.Supercruise, vectored exhaust, stealth configuration. A truly incredible platform. I recently read a description of the F22 as being only marginally better than the Euro-fighter.
NOT.

You've just got to love this quote.
""The F-15's radar cross section forces us to stop pursuing aerial targets when we encounter a SAM threat. The Raptor's stealth, on the other hand, allows us to run down those targets and destroy them. We can also drop bombs on those SAM threats or on any other target. With our global strike concept, we can attack anything in the air and sanitize a battlespace."
