First, Jesus doesn't need to be needed. Second, if He doesn't exist he isn't real, whether he is needed or not. The implication in your statement is that Jesus is real to those who need Him, even if He doesn't really exist. That's the way I take it. Please explain if you meant something else by that.

That's exactly what I meant; there is a comfort to be taken from such belief, why would it matter to you what another man believes?
