Abu Musa Island
Other Names: Abu Musa Jezireh; Bu Musa Island
Location: Latitude 25° 52' North; longitude 55° 01' East; in the province of Hormozgan
Primary Function: Location of anti-ship missiles.
Description and Activities: Abu Musa Island is located in Hormozgan province, off the Persian Gulf coast. It is strategically located in the shipping lanes of the Strait of Hormuz.
Seersucker missiles are deployed at Abu Musa and two other islands, Qeshm and Sirri. Since the mid-1990s, Iran has pursued a military buildup on the island, including US-made Hawk anti-aircraft missiles, artillery, and Seersuckers. Reportedly, C-801 Sardine anti-ship missiles have been deployed on the island also.
