The driver obviously didn't recognize that he was past the point at which the paradigm of civilized behavior was still in place.

Was the vehicle unlocked? Could he not just step on the gas and run a few of them, as opposed to being dragged out and beaten? When going thru "potentially unpleasant" areas, it's good to have doors locked, and be mentally prepared to run over a bunch of thugs rather than permit them to attempt to get you out of the car.
Sounds like this guy had inhibitions in the area of using deadly force to protect self from violence
