One of the great things about cell phones is their ability to allow us to be in constant contact with friends, colleagues and loved ones. But it's also one of their drawbacks especially in movie theaters.
Cell phone gabbers who don't stop or don't hesitate to start when the lights go down in a crowded movie theater can be frustrating for moviegoers and for theater owners who often walk a tightrope between respecting the individual and pleasing the crowd.
~snip~ One idea that's been floated around is installing cell phone jammers to keep calls out or filters to make sure only the most important calls disrupt patrons.
But is such an elaborate scheme necessary? Or is it simply the responsibility of the theater owners to police the crowd for cell phone junkies?
"I'd say on average your multiplex theater typically attracts the worst sorts of crowds," he said. "You know, more cell phone users are in there either answering their phones or letting their phones ring throughout the performance."
Anyone who's paid for a movie ticket and had to endure the constant chatter of someone on their cell phone knows what Steenbock is talking about.
As annoying as he said the behavior is, he doesn't want to make matters worse, so he usually stays seated though maybe a little steamed.

Better yet, buy yourself a nice HDTV and some surround sound speakers and stay home.
Now all Hollywood's gotta do is come up with movies worth seeing.
Perhaps the second enlightenment begins. Cell phones in theaters, ballcaps and smoking in restaurants, loud HD motor scooters, next they'll be encouraging CCW in church ('encouraging' 'cause it's already legal and common).
Pretty sad state of affairs when people can't/won't cease talking in a movie theatre.
Note to phone talkers: I AM NOT IN YOUR LIVINGROOM...STFU!

Interesting. There's a multiplex where I live and while we always have a bunch of cell phone junkies talking before the movie, once the lights go down it doesn't normally seem to be a problem. It's considered rude by all around here to talk during a movie so it just isn't done.
Between that and those cellphone owners' yappy brats (all of whom were obviously free from the ravages of manners), it'll be a long damned time before we ever go to another movie.
I would pay DOUBLE for an enforced "quiet theater".
No dang phones, no dang popcorn munching, no dang red vines plastic package rattling, no talking. No nacho munching.
Quiet snacks, respectful viewers. And no late arrivals walking in front of the screen two minutes into the movie.
And while Im at it........
Im sick of 15 minutes of TV commercials and previews for movies I dont want to see too.
Why not just eject anyone who uses a cell phone during the showing of a film with no refund. With the outrageous cost of going to a movie after a few get ejected, the use of cell phones would no longer be a problem.
I went with a hi-def projector and a gigantic retractable screen
I actually did search. I always do before posting.
"We can't accommodate every idiosyncratic personality out there who wants to watch a movie in the particular way in which they want to watch a movie."
I guess I'm an idiosyncratic personality who just wants to watch the movie I paid $14.00 for w/o louts interrupting.
Between the crap Hollyweird puts out (Brokeback Mountain, et. al.) and the RUDE patrons of most theaters, I can't drag Mrs Felis to a movie on the few occasions I DO want to go. Plus, we have surround sound and a nice medium large TV, so the DVDs look and sound better all the time.
I prefer those ejector seats, myself...
I will not go somewhere that I can not be reached in case of an emergency. My son has a serious medical condition and his caregiver absolutely must be able to reach me.
That being said, I will leave a theater, restaurant or whatever to take a call.

The cell phone service I have, works BEST in the local movie theatre. Amazing... Go outside and the reception bars drop
went to see King Kong last week...saw the onscreen reminder to shut off all cell phones....put mine on silent for emergencies...and that was it.
Heard one ring somewhere for a nano second during the movie and it was immediately silenced by the owner and no talking ensued.
If I were to have gotten and emergency call...I would have taken it out into the lobby before answering it.
My immediate family knew I was in the theater and would only have called for an emergency and it would have been the only call I would have answered (in the lobby).
