I realllly think the journalist chose her for this story. The picture was an important part of the story.
It`s kind of like homeless stories in the US; when they want you to really feel sorry for them, they:ll chose a white family that obviously has no substance abuse problems, doesn`t swear, and is just a tad scruffy.
That way, middle-class TV-watching tax-payers really, really RELATE to them.
