Gaza greenhouse guards shoot four men [PEACE Alert]
Jerusalem Post ^ | Dec. 26, 2005

Armed Palestinian guards at a Gaza Strip greenhouse in the former settlement of Netzer Hazani opened fire at a group of Palestinian laborers who approached the structure Monday, wounding four people, hospital officials said.

The laborers approached the greenhouse overnight Monday after hearing rumors that the business' owner planned to fire workers, officials said.

Amed al-Masri, general director of the company that operates about 2,700 greenhouses in Gaza, said there were no plans to dismiss workers and accused unknown elements of trying to sabotage the buildings.

Police blocked off the greenhouse, and bloodstains were seen on the ground.

The greenhouses, left behind by Israel after its withdrawal from Gaza in September, are a centerpiece of redevelopment plans for the area's economy.

About 8,000 laborers work in the greenhouses, which recently completed their first harvest under Palestinian control. On Sunday, Palestinians exported their first shipment of produce - a crop of strawberries - to Europe, al-Masri said.

The Palestinians expect to produce about 170 tons of produce, including cherry tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers and strawberries, with about 80 percent to be exported to Israel and the remainder to Europe.

Imagine the horror and international outrage if "Jewish settlers" had shot looters.

"with about 80 percent [of produce] to be exported to Israel"
Hmmm... I would insist on having [preferably Palestinian] food testers before I'd accept even one box.

Why should Israel have to accept even one carton of Jewish-planted and Palestinian-harvested crop?

Let them sell their ill gotten goods to the EU and the Arab League.

The laborers approached the greenhouse overnight Monday after hearing rumors that the business' owner planned to fire workers, officials said.

Sounds like they heard it incorrectly. The correct rumor seems to have been that the business' owner planed to fire at workers, not to fire the workers...

Praytell, aren't these the same greenhouses that the palis are begging for help indirectly (thru the U.S.) from the Israelis? Seems I read they are having probs.

Also, just for my education, are there any plans afoot for the displaced Israelis to restart greenhouse operations somewhere else in Israel? I sure hope so !

The second part of your answer is a sin in my book. Where the hell in the world can anyone expect to adversely take over a functioning operation AND be provided with a ready and open market for 80% of your output? Another greenhouse operation, even bigger and more advanced, should be built in Israel forthwith. B.S. in providing a ready market and opening up the borders to smuggling of whatever. JMHO

Police blocked off the greenhouse, and bloodstains were seen on the ground.

So even greenhouses get bloodstained in Moslem hands. I got a novel Idea, If we want peace in the Middle East, send the Hebrews to Hebron and the Arabs to Arabia.

Oh, I sure agree with you. But tell that to Israel, not me. They seem too intent on pacifying the terrorists. Its ridiculous.

"The Palestinians expect to produce about 170 tons of produce, including cherry tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers and strawberries, with about 80 percent to be exported to Israel and the remainder to Europe."

Now I've heard everything! The Philistines, who allahu fubared all over the place when they took over the greenhouses and trashed them, who now yell for help to use them, who fire rockets into Israel, who send homicide bombers into Israel for allahu fubar "martyrdom", will export 80 percent of their ill-gotten gains to Israel?!?!?!?!?!?!?!? Israel will actually take Philistine-grown produce while letting the settlers that originally set up the fields and built the greenhouses sit and rot?!?!?!?!? Exporting snow to Alaska would be less crazy!

I wouldn't buy or eat anything they produced. I'd grow it myself.

Isn't the US putting pressure upon Israel to do this or is Israel just showing the world it tried before doing what will needed to be done?
