When exactly do you think the national debt started mounting? Who was in charge at that time? How many peole in the Senate and House are members of the WWII or Korea generation, even today?

It really didn't takeoff until the 1960's and 1970's when the creating of the welfare state kicked into high gear.

Perhaps the root cause of the economic malaise comes from those who an earlier poster mentioned who worked in the late 1800's and early 1900's.

'Course THEY gave us the income tax that has been with us LO these many years.

- but, hey, come to think of it there was even an earlier income tax in 1863 so maybe it stems from the War Between the States (that's what my cousin in GA claims).
