I find this sentence a slap in the face to all the non-famous men and women who have given their life for their country in this and other wars:

was the embarrassing reality surrounding the futility of his death-the wasting of an iconic American hero.

So does the professor mean we can only be heros if we are a famous football, baseball, hockey, etc., star and under no circumstances should these so-called "stars" join us peons in dangerous situations?????

I don't like Chomsky any more than the next guy, having had to slog through his pseudo-intellectual mush during grad school, but I'm not sure I'd pop a cap in a guy who wanted to meet him.

Meeting Chomsky in person has to be punishment enough in itself.
