(I sniff bait, but...)
Often called "grafitti".
Tagging, ma'am, is what happens when an unauthorised scroat gets his hands on a spray-paint can, or a permanent felt pen, or a glass-cutter, and defaces public and/or private property with same.

A lot of that happened with the 'war on poverty' and welfare checks, etc.

He has a right to sound off. Exactly who is he sounding off to? It is preaching to the choir because the people that need it aren't saying 'gee he's right'. Do black kids who listen to rap music read the New York Times? It's one thing to talk about something and another thing to have solutions to the problem. Besides not all black kids listen to rap. How about focusing on the ones that DON'T. I think gangsta rappers get enough attention.

Since I can't read it. My only comment is: even a broken clock is right twice a day.
When the Times was free and before they went for profits and now have to actually pay to read their swill, Herbert did write some stuff that was reasonable and cogent..............for the Times

"Believe it or not, black people who obey the law and don't committ crime aren't strange anomilies. If you watch the what the lib media says you'd think that black life is sad."
That is not hard to believe at all, because it is true all over America. Many, if not most, blacks in America are realizing the dream. I live on a small cul de sac a few miles outside Washington, DC. There are about eighteen families on our street. About fifteen years ago a black couple with children moved into our neighborhood. So far, one of their kids is the only medical doctor to emerge from our many neighborhood kids. That is not to say our kids have not done well. Most of them have. It takes generations of progress to get to where most Americans are. A lot of blacks have traveled that route.

His hip hop column was the #1 column on today's AJC editorial page. Apparently Cynthia Tucker agrees with him.

Wel, for your information, smartie-pants, I
do know what grafitti is...and I thought "tagging" was something you did to a deer, or a bear, or to someone's toe.

That was a good read, and it causes me to wonder if he and William Raspberry are planning some effort together. Raspberry, as many here know, is a columnist with the Washington Post, and also black. His column today announced his retirement and that he is going back home to Mississippi where he plans to work with youth in his home town. The timing is almost unbelievable.
Raspberry is often a voice of reason in his writings. Let's hope he is successful in retirement. A fact that is probably only of importance to me is that I, too, will be moving to Mississippi in retirement in a few months. With Morgan Freeman, William Raspberry and yours truly, an old white dude down there (my roots are also in the region) things will only have come full circle if we can get Marion Barry, former mayor of DC to move back to Ita Bena, Ms. Just kidding, just kidding.
