I just re-watched "The Crossing" with Jeff Daniels as George Washington the other night. What a story.

TERRIBLE headline:

Could mean they "pulled it off," as in, they accomplished it successfully.

Or, it could mean they were "pulled off the attempt," as in, they were extracted from it, thus being "rescued" without success.

Ah, history - we do well to remember the Minutemen, past and present.

This is the battle that turned the Revolutionary war. I am glad the re-enactors made it. Also glad the original group made it!LOL!

Did future president James Madison precede Washington this time also?

I live about ten minutes from Washington Crossing (which is in Pennsylvania, by the way) and the re-enactments are a great show for the family. That's a nice park over there.

My ancestor was Gen. Washington's drummer boy who accompanied him in his famous crossing of the Delaware River to capture the Hessian mercenaries.

It is conceivable that one of my other ancestors, who were from the Hess region of Germany could have been one of those fighting for the British.

My other more direct ancestors were Swiss/German Mennonites in colonial Pennsylvania, pacifists, who were likely conscientious objectors in the Revolutionary War.

So I likely had ancestors on all three sides of the Revolutionary War.

I would like to get out there and be able to see this sometime!
I believe that an older Uncle of mine has been out to the area himself doing family research...and as a decendant of the owners of McConkey's Ferry I'd like to see the area and the re-enactment in particular.

Unlike the past three attempts, when days of precipitation pushed water levels and speeds above safety levels, this Christmas presented a more placid route from Pennsylvania to New Jersey.

Good thing that they weren't doing the real thing. They'd've waited for better weather and met a prepared enemy.

The re-enactors had a decent day yesterday, despite the rain. It was unseasonably warm and not windy. Some years they fight sub-freezing temps and strong winds as well as any kind of wintry precipitation mixes. I'm sure they appreciated the conditions yesterday.

I had an ancestor who was one of the rowers.

I found this out by reading a genealogical journal that many years later, when this ancestor was an old man, he rode to his daughter's house and gave her the piece of scrip he had received from General Washington for his rowing services that night, that she might keep it for his grandson.

Wouldn't I LOVE to know whatever became of that piece of scrip?

First re-enactments were done with John B. Kelly, Jr. until his death. (Brother of Grace Kelly) Saw him do the crossing in 1985.

A&E did a great film on Washington Crossing the Delaware a few years ago. It showed snow and terrible weather. Just think if it had never happened. God was on Washington's side that night.
