French row over charity pork soup

A charity run by an extreme-right group in the south of France has caused anger by serving the homeless only pork soup, which Jews and Muslims do not eat.

The soup kitchen is set up one night each week in the port of Nice and has drawn numerous protests.

The charity has defended offering what it calls traditional cuisine to French and European homeless people.

Protesters have denounced the practice as racist but the local authority says it is powerless to intervene.

For three weeks the food has been served up at Nice harbour by a group close to a small far-right organisation called Bloc Identitaire.

The operation has drawn as many protesters as homeless people.

They accuse the group - called Soulidarieta, or Solidarity in the local dialect - of blatant discrimination by offering pork soup only, deliberately to exclude poor Muslims and Jews.

'Nothing illegal'

The group's head, Dominique Lescure, said pork was a traditional part of French cuisine.

But he admitted wanting to serve the soup to what he called his "compatriots and European homeless people".

Nice has a large Muslim population.

One protester said the practice was like telling people who do not eat pork to "stay in their cardboard boxes and starve".

Several welfare organisations have complained, but both the local town hall and governor's office say the group has done nothing illegal.

Earlier this year it was prevented from operating in Paris for administrative reasons.

I'll say it out loud: Stay in your cardboard boxes and starve.

Religious preferences should take a back seat to starvation.

Jewish organizations operate kosher soup kitchens for poor Jews and anyone else who is needy.

It is only Muslims who expect to be fed by the infidel, since all of their zakat ("charity") is dedicated to spreading Wahabism and waging jihad.

He, he. The French have apparently not heard the expression "don't look a gift horse in the mouth."

They've got two choices: eat the pork, or find a leftwing charity that is willing to feed them.

Rots a ruck.

Of course they just HAD to mention that it was an extreme right wing group. No bias there, huh? So, why don't the Muslims open their own soup kitchens to help their own. I understand that there certainly is enough money floating around the Middle East.

I'm amazed that people would complain to the government because some charity is giving away something some of the poor can't use. Nobody has problem with charity directed specifically AT Muslims so why would there be a problem with with this.

One protester said the practice was like telling people who do not eat pork to "stay in their cardboard boxes and starve".

Now what kind of a religion would have it's adherents "stay in their cardboard boxes and starve" rather than allow them to have some yummy pork soup?

More people should protest against such a stupid religion.

If the charity run by rightwingers serve only pork, it may seem to be a bit racist, but France is a free country: don't like it, don't eat it. Discrimination? That's absurd.

I second that.

You're thinking of Belgium.

That's where all the old, used up nags from Eli Lilly are sent.

We all suspect the particular "charity" has ulterior motives, but the cold, hard facts are that it's Islam and its teachings that's keeping their poor from chowing down on pork soup.

I presume they add bok choy or some other cabbage to the mix ~ great stuff on a cold night!

I don't get these protesters. Wouldn't their efforts be better spent feeding the homeless? I guess they would rather dictate how this group spends its money.

On the other hand, is this group doing this to help the needy, or mainly to exclude Muslims? In either case, I don't really care (people are still being fed, which is good), although if it is the latter, I'm not sure how "Christian" it is of them.

Let's say the group has only the highest of Christian motives and is serving pork soup ~ the outcome is the same. Moslems will continue to insult them for serving pork.
