WASHINGTON, Dec. 23, 2005 At Camp Fallujah, Iraq, today, Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld passed a box to the camp's sergeant major. The sergeant major then distributed the contents - handfuls of pre-paid calling cards -- to Marines serving there.

Rumsfeld at Camp Fallujah, Iraq, Dec. 23. The Wal-Mart Corporation sent more than $125,000 worth of pre-paid telephone calling cards along with the secretary. Senior noncommissioned officers have distributed them to American servicemembers all over the Middle East. "The timing on this is great," said Lance Cpl. Nicholas Lutz, a mechanic with the 8th Marines. "It was going to be a short call home for Christmas, but with this it'll be a much better visit with my family."
Other Marines cheered when they saw what the sergeant major was handing out, a DoD official traveling with Rumsfeld said.
Giant retailer Wal-Mart sent 5,100 pre-paid telephone calling cards worth more than $125,000 so military members serving overseas can phone home during the holidays, said Allison Barber, deputy assistant secretary of defense for public affairs.
Each phone card is good for about an hour of talking time, Barber said
